Creating Events

Wikipedia articles → Histropedia events

You can create a new event out of any Wikipedia article that hasn't already been added to the Histropedia database. The new event will take the same name as the Wikipedia article that is used.

There is currently no way to create an event that is not a Wikipedia article, but this option will be available soon.

All events created will be instantly available to all users of the site, including the freedom to edit the details you choose.

Finding an article

1. Search for any Wikipedia article using the main search box on the site.

2. Select one of the search results
This will load the article in the Reading Window.
Note: Search results with a  symbol have already been turned into events so will simply be added to the timeline if you click on them.

3. Click on the 'Create Event' button at the bottom of the reading window.

4. Check for automatic date(s)
If you're lucky, the system will be able to find a date for the new event from either Wikipedia or Wikidata. Just click on the word 'use' to accept a suggested date.
It is highly recommended that you always use the dates from Wikidata wherever possible.

5. Choose the date(s) manually
(Not necessary if automatic dates are used)
The precision setting for the start and end dates will determine which input options are available, so this should always be decided as the first step.
Enter the dates for the event using numerical values only (e.g. "2" instead of "Feb").

Click here for more info about entering dates.

6. Choose picture (optional)

By clicking on the arrow buttons you can browse through all of the pictures that are present in the Wikipedia article you are creating an event from.

7. Click save
This will add the new event to the database.

After saving, you can add the event to any timeline in seconds using the main search box on the site.

Choosing the most relevant date

All events that are created will instantly be available to all users of the site, so please take care to ensure the accuracy and neutrality of the dates and images that you choose.

It is also important that you only choose the 'main date' when creating an event, as we currently only support a single event for each Wikipedia article - for example, you should always use the birth and death dates when creating an event from a person article.
